How to Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Properly
It is illegal in California to toss household hazardous waste (HHW) into the trash. Be sure to always take HHW like motor oil and oil filters, anti-freeze, paints, solvents, cleaners and old batteries to a certified collection facility. Riverside County has three permanent collection centers that offer free drop-off service and safe disposal of your unwanted chemicals. The county also sponsors occasional HHW collection events. HHW Disposal Tips
- Transport limit: A maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of HHW may be transported per vehicle, per visit.
- Containers: Chemicals, except motor oil, fuels and anti-freeze should be in their original containers and labeled. All containers should have lids and be protected from leaking or breaking. Transport all HHW items in a sturdy box.
- Keep it simple: Do not mix types of waste or combine oil-based paint with latex paint.
- Stay safe: Place the HHW box in the trunk of your car or in the bed of your truck. Keep items away from passengers.
